A Rare Case of a Rectal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) Discovered During a Routine Colonoscopy

A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a rare malignancy, accounting for only 0.1% to 3% of all (GI) malignancies. Although GISTs are the most common mesenchymal GI tract, they primarily found within stomach, with rectal rarely reported. They may present bleeding, constipation, pain, or palpable mass while some incidentally. The incidence has been on rise, possibly due advancements in diagnostic technology. In this case report, we 50-year-old female who presented intermittent constipation and pain was have submucosal during routine colonoscopy. Further evaluation confirmed presence spindle-cell neoplasm, which mildly cellular showed positive expression CD34 CD117 immunohistochemistry, consistent diagnosis GIST rectum. This report emphasizes importance colonoscopies early detection neoplastic lesions colon highlights GISTs, their risk factors, pathogenesis, sites occurrence.
